A few years ago a close friend of mine reached a point where her crystal meth use became well beyond an addiction. Amongst other things she:
- thought her entire house was bugged
- accused me and other friends of spying on her
- was convinced I was an undercover policeman
- thought someone had buried $200,000 in cash in her back yard
- was thousands of dollars in debt to finance companies and various people
Am I for real? Yes. What was once a beautiful intelligent, fit young lady, was now someone in terrible need of help. This story may ring true for some readers.
Providing assistance to such a person speaking from first-hand experience, is near-on impossible. It requires professionals, and even then getting a message through to someone who really does live in their own world can be tough at times.
In working with her family and friends to help her out, our first port of call was to see what drug rehab centres existed in Australia. A quick search on Google for 'drug rehab australia' yielded next to no results. Is Australia completely ignorant of such problems?
Seeing Ben Cousins have to travel to a drug rehab centre in Malibu California is perhaps testament to this. Certainly drug rehab is not inexpensive, but the lack of support throughout Australia is somewhat terrifying. How is a family meant to cope with the revelation that their daughter is addicted to ice? How are they going to help her? What support mechanisms are there in place? In Australia, very little.
